Anthropological image analysis in the example of photography.

The article presents photography as a method of anthropological analysis, which undergoes interpretation while the interaction with the viewer is taking place. In the first part I concentrate on theoretical assumptions which focus on anthropological problems of the picture, especially semiology. Then, I describe the informants and the tools used – photography and research techniques: definitions of semantic fields; associations’ map and Robert Plutchik’s emotional model. The only formal criterion of the photographic samples was a common occurrence of a man and an animal. The material under analysis in this article, obtained during the interviews, concerns Krzysztof Hejke’s photograph Łódzkie podwórko from 1988. Out of the ten photographs chosen, this was the one that was found most interesting by the interviewed. I analyzed it considering emotions and associations it evoked and I constructed definitions of semantic fields of the photographic concept. I also discussed interpretations of the photograph, conducted taking the author’s intentions into account. In the last part of this text I present conclusions that may serve as a be a basis for future research.

Touching and gesture exchange as an element of emotional bond construction. Application of visual sociology and grounded theory in the research of human and non-human animals interaction.

The paper deals with a problem of analysis of interactions between humans and animals. The author presents his research in which he analyzed transcription of video interactions between humans and animals. The observation of gestures exchanges allows to reconstruct the social rituals (greetings and farewells) and others forms of associations (play, spontaneous expressions of emotions, bathing, reposing, walking, fighting during walks, feeding, indulgent castigation, giving medications, setting the form of interaction – negotiation), which create emotional and social bonds. The analysis of visual data gives the possibility to research corporality and direct interactions of 'bodies' in a sequential exchange of gestures that is the basic dimension of emotional and social bond's creation and finally a construction of "family identity'. The grounded theory methodology has been used in the research and analysis of data process.

Woman In The Male World – Conflict Or Cohesion Of Roles? Examples of mountaineering, skimountaineering and adventure racing

The article raises the topic of the relation between female roles and sports roles on the example of the collectivity of women who professionally do sports that are commonly associated rather with masculinity than with femininity: mountaineering, skimountaineering and adventure racing. Traditionally, and to some extent also nowadays, professional sport is connected with male roles. Many autors claim that demands of sports are incompatible with demands of socially defined female roles. As a result female athletes face the role conflict which is exceptionally strong in disciplines which maintained their “male” character until now. The aim of the research described in this article was to show the issue of conflict or cohesion between femininity and professional sport from the perspective of women active in “male” sports mentioned above. The research was based on the methodology of grounded theory. As a result author intended to show the topic “from inside”, referring to the humanistic factor and showing the complexity of the problem. Various types of material were used in the research: opinions of female athletes themselves, referringo to whether it is possible to accomodate being a woman and alpinist, skialpinist or adventure racer, and, on the other side, their own biographies and personal experiences referring to this issue.

Workers and business people: Occupational career patterns and social change in Poland

The paper presents the results of a research on the occupational careers followed by workers and business people in the period of deep social change in Poland after 1989.
The concepts of career, resources, and biographical work enabled the investigation of interaction between ‘objective’ and ‘subjective’ aspects of occupational life. The application of grounded theory methodology for the analysis of over two hundred narrative interviews with contemporary Polish workers and business people enabled us to go beyond the analysis of individual cases and to reconstruct a typology of careers. The patterns of ‘anchor’, ‘patchwork’, and ‘construction’ go crosswise the divisions determined by the discourse of ‘winners’ and ‘losers’ of system transformation, the organizational hierarchy and stratification. The pattern of construction career, long-term planned and most rewarded in the new reality, turns out to be hardly accessible for most of workers, small entrepreneurs and low-level managers. In consequence, the objective inequalities on the level of possessed resources are translated into biographical processes leading to the ‘naturalisation’ of chaotic patchwork career and the ‘work on position’ within a career well anchored in one company.

Mobbing as an interaction.

The main aim of this paper is to present some aspects of mobbing from the symbolic interactionist standpoint. In the centre of my analyses are interactions between mobber and victim but also including interactions between both of them and the other co-workers. The conclusions presented in this paper base on my research conducted in years 2004 – 2007. I used qualitative methods, the technique of narrative interview toward victims and semi structured interview toward specialists who professionally take care of mobbing victims. The conceptual and analytical work base on grounded theory assumptions.
